When Penny Met POTUS #RaisingAReader

We like to read here. A little of this and a little of that. Classics that I read and loved as a child, all the way to books about monsters.  Now, we can add POTUS to the list.  Perfect for election year without getting into politics for the younger generation!

When Penny Met POTUS is a new picture book by debut author Rachel Ruiz, illustrated by Melissa Manwill.  The ideal book for this election season, When Penny Met POTUS is a unique and clever story that explores how children imagine their parents’ jobs and upended gender expectations. Penny is a young girl whose mother works for the President of the United States – the POTUS. She has heard the term POTUS over and over, but isn’t sure who or what he is.  When she imagines a POTUS she sees a giant, blue, friendly monster – and imagines all the adventures he goes on.  Finally, when she spends a day at the office with her mom, she asks a few questions, looks around, and gets to discover just who and what POTUS actually is - and what he (or she) really does.  The answer – while surprising to Penny – is ultimately just as cool as meeting a monster!
