Good Boy, Bad Boy - @abramsbooks

Bad Boy, Good Boy is being released on May 7, 2013.
I really liked the story, but it did bother me a bit that they kept calling Sam a bad boy.
Bad Boy, Good Boy is a really cute book that is based on 4 short stories.  Each of the stories have great illustrations and they follow Sam on his adventure.
Yes, Sam does things that would upset adults... and maybe Sam doesn't think... but I really did not like that they kept calling him a bad boy...   (I know, maybe it is just me...but I am saying I did not like it.)
Anyways, at the end of each story, we see why Sam did what he did... and we learn that Sam is NOT a bad boy... he is actually a Good Boy... that just did things wrong to get the results... He was never a "bad boy" on purpose, as his heart was always in the right place...
Broxton and I were able to talk about what all Sam did... and how it could have been handled differently, so maybe that was a good way to do it... To let the book point out it was bad... and then for me as the mom to talk to Broxton about making it good...
I do love the illustrations... and the message...
I feel as though this book was able to talk to Broxton about doing the right thing, and for that... I loved it... Also, Sam is just the cutest dog with a huge heart, so that made it all the better for us!!!

  1. This is a good review, and though it doesn't deter me from reading the book, I know I wouldn't like the 'bad boy' reference either.

  2. I like that you said the full truth about the book. The way you describe the story reminds me of the No David! books by David Shannon. He gets in trouble and doesn't mean to.

  3. I've always felt that same way about it. I never called my kids bad. We only referred to their actions, not them. I certainly didn't feel one naughty event warranted a label of "bad. I'm glad the overall message of the book is good though.

  4. I think I'd feel the same way too. I always tell my children just because they made a bad decision, doesn't mean they are bad. We all make mistakes.

And I do remember the No David books.
    My son loved them!

  6. Are the illustrations fun? I have a hard time buying a book if the illustrations are not out of the box.
