I love looking at how much things have changed through the years... back when I worked in the restaurant, we had a couple that came in...  Both close to 100 and I loved chatting with them about how much things had changed since they were kids... It was a great way to get a different perspective and a great way to bond with the older generation.

The latest book for us?  Grandma, Aren't You Glad ... the World's Finally in Color Today! I will admit, I wasn't really eager to read it, as the title just did not really grab me.. But I am glad that I did!  This was a cute book that I am so excited that we have, as its a fun way to explain to Broxton how things used to be..
In this book, a couple kids climb up and get an old book -- that is actually an old family photo album. Their grandma comes in and goes through the pages, telling them how life used to be (with black and white photos on the page to display what she is talking about) and then on the opposite page, we have color photos that are talking about how things are today!  Going across the top of the book is a timeline of events that happened through the years - starting with 1902 when Carrier invented the first air conditioner and  ending in 2011 with artwork being sold making it the highest price ever sold for a work of art.

I think that this is not only a great way to show kids how things used to be... but it is also a way for them to document how things were when they were kids.. and they can then share it with their kids down the road, just to show how things are always changing!   We really enjoyed the book and I am glad that we did read it!  The rhyming, sing-song of it all makes for a great read!

You know you have a pretty good book on your hands when you leave it laying around and you spot your husband pick it up a few times to look at it ... and he NEVER picks up a book... EVER.   Well, that was just the case with Football Then to Wow from Sports Illustrated Kids!
When I saw the title of this book, I figured it would make a welcome addition in our house of football fans!  Let's be honest here... with the boys coming up at Christmas, I knew I was going to need to find a bit of new "reading material" for their bathroom visits... Maybe a bit TMI for you - but just being honest!!!
In Football Then to Wow, we get a great look at history... and I have really enjoyed this hard covered book.  (I believe it is so much more than a bathroom book that I mentioned before, it would be a great book to give a kid starting football... or to give as a gift to a new dad that loves football and will want to share the love with his kid as they grow up...  The reasons behind the gift giving on this are endless....)
So, we open the book to start with THEN - Johnny Unitas, 1958 and move to the NOW - Peyton Manning, 2014.
The contents of the book shows us that we will be able to read about :
The Basics
The Players
The Strategy
The Fan Experience

The basics was pretty exciting for me... You get to learn about the changing of the rules of the game, starting in 1876 when the first rules were written until The Tuck rule of 2013 was eliminated... great information right there!  From the balls they use to the uniforms they wear, this is page after page of information sure to excite the fans of all ages.
With the players, we learn of some of the greatest players and the different positions they hold..  another important part of teaching the game!
The strategy is where I get lost...   We learn of the different coaching styles through the years and start to learn the systems they use when setting up different plays!
Finally, we end with the fan experience... This section allows us to see just how much media now plays into the ultimate experience... from television to magazines, game day reports to sideline reporters... and who can forget all the gaming systems out there??   (Yep, you know they even had to talk about fantasy football too!)

I think this is a pretty cool book and since Broxton is getting older and seems more eager to learn about football, I think it is a good addition to our library!  The ONLY thing I did not like?  It did not touch on College Football.  Being that I am a college fan more than NFL, that was a negative for me... But, I do realize that NFL fans are all over the place and college isn't as big in other area's.  Hopefully they will come out with a college book next?

With Broxton being in Kindergarten now, we are reading every single night and having to log it into our reading journal.  We work on site words and I am SO EXCITED for the time when he can sit and read a book to me... It will be coming soon, I just know it!
We were sent the World of Reading Level Pre-1 for review and it was a new to me format.  In this set of books, we get 6 books :  Jake Hatches a Plan, X Marks the Croc!, The Case of the Missing Sparkleizer, Caught Blue Handed, Loud Louie and finally, Sophia Makes a Friend. We really enjoyed reading them and I really loved that it had a mix of the different Disney Junior Shows characters!
If you are unfamiliar with Pre-1 level books, let me explain....
Picture Reading * Word Repetition* Short, Simple Sentences.
Example: "There's the (nest) says (Cubby) But how will we get the (egg) up there?  No problem says (Izzy) Let's fly!"
Each of the words in my example are actually pictures of the word... with the word underneath it.    It did take us a bit longer to read than other books, but it was because he was helping me with reading the pictures!  We loved it!!!!

Boxed Set - Volume 1

This would make a great gift for anyone this holiday season...  It would also make a great gift for a preschool - kindergarten class for them to share and read some of their favorites!

FTC Compliant Review Policy:

I will be sharing more with you about Stride Rite soon, but I did want to share with you the press release I recently received.  If you have GENTLY WORN footwear, please donate them to Stride Rite for their #Stride4Souls to help people around the world.

LEXINGTON, Mass., Sept. 3, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Stride Rite, the best place to shop for kids' shoes, wants to help families across the country find new homes for their gently worn and previously loved footwear. Stride Rite, working in concert with The Little Gym, is anticipating a donation of tens of thousands of shoes to benefit Soles4Souls, the international charity that collects shoes and distributes them to people in need around the globe. The initiative kicks off today and continues through the end of the month at Stride Rite stores (#stride4souls), through striderite.com and The Little Gym nationwide.

From Sept. 3 through Sept. 30, families can visit their local Stride Rite locations to donate outgrown or unwanted shoes in a designated Soles4Souls drop box. For every pair donated, families will receive 20 percent off towards a same-day purchase of new shoes. In addition, families will also receive a certificate for a free class at The Little Gym with every purchase of new Stride Rite shoes at participating stores situated near one of The Little Gym locations.

The Little Gym, the experiential learning and physical development center for children 4 months through 12 years old, created the "Big Hearts, Little Shoes" initiative to provide an interactive way for children to learn the value of charity and for parents and children to participate in a cause together. It is the first campaign for Soles4Souls focused on collecting children's shoes, a major need for children living in poverty around the globe.

To find the nearest Stride Rite "Big Hearts, Little Shoes" donation location visit http://www.striderite.com/en/soles-4-souls/. Stride Rite's website will also feature an animated video narrated by child actor Jonathan Morgan Heit ("Jake and the Never Land Pirates," "Bedtime Stories") that explains the campaign to children.

It is estimated that 400 million children globally live in extreme poverty (defined, as living on less than $1.25 per day). These children may not have access to adequate footwear and without shoes, many won't be able to avoid disease or go to school. Since 2006, Soles4Souls has distributed 22 million pairs of shoes to those in need in 127 countries.  More than half of our distributions occur in the United States.

"We are excited to partner on a mission so close to our hearts, providing shoes to kids. We see every day how a pair of shoes helps kids build confidence, take first steps or better enable them to play. For children who grow up barefoot, a donation of a single pair of shoes can change their world," said Kiran Smith, VP of Marketing for Stride Rite. "The 'Big Hearts, Little Shoes' program provides a unique opportunity for kids to help other kids go to school or just go out and play safely."

"Stride Rite and The Little Gym are perfect partners to grow the 'Big Hearts, Little Shoes' program.  Kids instinctively understand the importance of shoes and how they can make a difference to people in need," said Buddy Teaster, CEO of Soles4Souls. "It really is about helping young people, both the donors and the recipients, make the world a better place."

"In its first two years, 'Big Hearts, Little Shoes' has proven to be a worthwhile opportunity to help parents introduce the value of philanthropy to their children," said Ruk Adams, President & CEO, The Little Gym International. "We are excited to see the program expand to include shoe collection locations at Stride Rite stores, as we know first-hand how the smallest of deeds can make a big impact."

Frozen Fever - Debut Spring 2015

I am not sure if you watched "The Story of Frozen" the other night when it was on television...
In case you missed it... they made an announcement:

WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS ANNOUNCES THE RETURN OF “FROZEN” FAVORITES ANNA AND ELSA IN 2015’S NEW ANIMATED SHORT “FROZEN FEVER”

BURBANK, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2014) From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes the new animated short “Frozen Fever,” welcoming back to the big screen Anna, Elsa, Kristoff and, of course, the one-and-only Olaf.

Directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, and produced by Peter Del Vecho, with an all-new original song by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, “Frozen Fever” marks the first project reuniting the Oscar®-winning original team from Disney’s “Frozen.”

The announcement was first made within the ABC Television Network special “The Story of Frozen: Making an Animated Classic,” which aired September 2. The special also featured the world television debut of a scene from the new action comedy adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios, “Big Hero 6,” as well as a sneak peek at the upcoming season of the ABC series “Once Upon A Time.”

In “Frozen Fever,” it's Anna's birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but Elsa's icy powers may put more than just the party at risk.

The short debuts Spring 2015.
