Baking Day at Grandma's

One of the sad things about being away from family is that Broxton doesn't get the chance to bake and do fun things like that with my mom.  I know that sounds sad, but the truth is that my mom doesn't bake anyways, so it really isn't like he is missing much.  I do wish that I baked and did things like that, as he does enjoy when we make a cake or something, but that is not very often.
Growing up, I remember making cakes with my Nana and then getting to add the frosting at the end. When I saw the book, Baking Day at Grandma's, I thought it would be a cute book to read and I was not disappointed!

Synopsis from Amazon:
A sugary sweet story perfect for families to read together!

Three bouncing little bear siblings, wrapped tight in their winter clothes, can't wait to tromp through the snow for Baking Day at Grandma's!  In a rhyming text that begs to be sung, the bears and their grandma pour and mix and stir--with breaks for hot cocoa and dancing--to create the perfect wintry treat. Then they wrap it up in ribbons to show that sweets are even better when they're shared. With a recipe in the back, this is a perfect family feel-good story for the fall, winter, and any holiday spent with grandparents.

I think this is a cute book to give to Grandma.. (You could always buy it now and then gift it to her on Grandparents day!)  It is super cute and I just love the illustrations!

Yes, I would LOVE a Date Night to watch #TheLongestRide ( #Recipe )

Being at the end of your pregnancy in the summer means you want to rest... At least that is what it means to me these days.  I am all about staying in and enjoying movies at home. When we were invited to have a perfect movie night to watch The Longest Ride (Nicholas Sparks, you know how much I love him) I was so excited to be part of this event.  Not only because of Nicholas Sparks, but also because who was I to turn down a date night at home?????
Based on the bestselling novel by master storyteller Sparks, THE LONGEST RIDE centers on the star-crossed love affair between Luke, a former champion bull rider looking to make a comeback, and Sophia, a college student who is about to embark upon her dream job in New York City’s art world.  As conflicting paths and ideals test their relationship, Sophia and Luke make an unexpected connection with Ira, whose memories of his own decades-long romance with his beloved wife deeply inspire the young couple.  Spanning generations and two intertwining love stories, THE LONGEST RIDE explores the challenges and infinite rewards of enduring love.

If you follow me on Instagram, you saw that I sent out a photo of the goody bag that was sent to me for this special night... It was full of goodies that you can purchase at Target right now.  (Meaning NO EXCUSES for you not to plan a date night of your own!)

So, are you wondering what was in the bag????
I will tell you:
  • A copy of The Longest Ride on Blu-ray
  • Orville Redenbacher (Popcorn)
  • Kernel Seasonings (To spice up your popcorn)
  • Chex Mix
  • An autographed copy of The Choice

I will admit that pregnancy brain has me right now, so I am not 100% sure if I read this book or not, although I would be surprised if I haven't read it yet.  That being said, I am going into this movie without knowing the end result, except for the fact that I know I will love it and I am about 99% sure I will shed at least a tear or two during the movie.  (I don't think there is a book or movie by him that hasn't got me teary eyed! Let's just be honest here!)

Okay, let me quit yapping and get ready to enjoy my date night!!!
I will post more about the movie once we watch it!!!
Run on out to Target and plan your date night now too!

Here are a few recipes to help make it a Night to Remember.

When Broxton was born, I tried to be the best at keeping notes... Only problem was that I was not keeping them all together.  I would write one thing on the back of a receipt, one on a post it note, on and on and on.  Now, I have no clue what is where and I admit, I did not do a good job of keeping a baby book of any sorts, so many of his "firsts" were seen by me... and of course I told family and friends... but if you ask me now, I would not be able to tell you when or anything like that.  It makes me sad, but I use it as a life lesson to do better this time around.
Oh, another thing that was hard for me was a schedule.
I found these sheets online and printed out a ton of them, it was to help me figure out when he ate last, when his last diaper was (and what type of diaper it was) and all sorts of other information I needed...  Yep, once it was time to write it down, I could not find the papers I printed.

I learned of a company called "TIME TOO" and they have all sorts of baby trackers to make things easier for moms like me that need a bit of help in the organizational department.

  • For newborns, night owls and nursing moms
  • Easily record and monitor a newborn baby's daily activities, schedules and needs
  • 3 month journal format featuring day and night Baby Tracker page views (90 two-sided pages = 90 day and night tracking pages)
  • Day and night (24 hr) tracking of nursing, feeding, sleep, diaper changes, milestones, to-dos and more
  • Spiral bound and designed to open and lay flat for easy recording and viewing
  • Collectible milestone and memory page on the back cover.
  • Printed in the USA on recycled paper
  • iParenting Award Winner
This book will be in my hospital bag.  I don't know about you, but I am not the best at remembering things, so this will be a great help!
The inside features a section that has places to put important information:
Dr name (pediatrician and OB-GYN)  it also has a spot for emergency contacts and a place for websites that you visit often.   The baby tracker doesn't waste time or space with nonsense, so after that important information, you are immediately in the book whre you record daily events.  Each page has an hour section (and a half hour section) then you have columns with nap, nurse (to mark right or left), feed (number of ounces) change, play and even a section for comments.  I tend to write rather large, so I do like the amount of space they give you to fill things in.  It isn't too large to be a waste of space, but it isn't small enough that I will not be able to use.  The bottom of each page gives an additional section.
You have a checklist section (bath, vitamins, medication)  as well as developmental notes and even baby needs.   The back of the book ends with a section of the health record.  You can use this to check off if you choose to vaccinate your child.  There is also an area for you to record the growth with the percentile and all that good stuff you get at all the checkups!
I love that this book is small enough to throw in the diaper bag, to take to the doctor appointments, but it isn't so small to be inconvenient to use.  I know we will get much use out of this one!
Sample page of the baby tracker.
Once the baby is past the 3 month stage, you have used up your newborn tracker, so they offer an "All About My Day" journal.  This is basically like the newborn tracker, but there is a different color cover, so you will not get it mixed up.
  • For daily baby schedule & activity tracking and childcare handoffs
  • Easily record, view and monitor baby's daily activities, schedules and needs
  • 6 month journal format featuring Baby Tracker daily page charts (90 pp = 180 days)
  • Tracks feeding, sleep, diaper changes, play, milestones, to-dos and more
  • Spiral bound and designed to open and lay flat for easy recording and viewing
  • Additional information tabs: About Me family info page, Contact list, Medical emergency form, health record, immunization chart.
  • Two emergency wallet contact cards
  • Receipt and note pocket built into back cover of journal
  • Printed in the USA on recycled paper
  • iParenting Award Winner
This book also includes a contact list, a medical emergency list and even a section for health records.  It also has the same breakdown on the am/ pm pages that I mentioned above.  In addition to the same features of the newborn tracker, this book includes a pocket at the end of the book to keep any additional information you might want/ need.

With both of the books, I love that they use colors such as orange, purples and greens. In doing so, I feel that it makes the book gender neutral and of course for those waiting to be surprised, this is a great feature!
Also, these journals are spiral bound, so you can lay it flat or fold it over to be one sided.  I personally like books like this, as it makes it easier for me to write in.

In addition to the journals that I mentioned, they do offer more products for you to choose from. Another one that looks pretty good is the Refillable Annual Childcare Organizer!  For those that have a baby sitter on call, they even have babysitter pads!   Talk about covering all the bases!
Head on over to see what product you might need!

Did you know that they make high chairs that are perfect for camping??  Yes!!!!
We were recently sent a portable high chair for review and I have to tell you, we all think it is pretty neat.  You don't have to worry about me heading out camping anytime soon, but it is great for travel. Like if we go to visit my family, we can just throw it in the back of the car.  (It is seriously like one of those fold up chairs you throw in the bag to take the the beach or for tailgating.)  Speaking of tailgating, this would be perfect to put your little one in for a tailgating get together or even a family reunion or BBQ.

You can purchase a Portable High Chair in a number of patterns.  You can order a solid colored one, such as red or black... You can also order one that has a camo design.  Get this though... They also have collegiate logos available now!   GO DAWGS!!!!

As I said, I really like it.  It was simple to put together,  you literally just pull it out of the bag and open it.  Press the little silver clips on each side down to lock it in place.  The tray is already connected to it.  Oh yeah, they even have a cup holder built into the tray so you don't have to worry about that.  The tray has a clear plastic cover on it to make it easy to wipe off and then store when not in use.
I will say the one draw back is if you have a bigger child.  The tray is not movable.  It says it is for ages up to three, but I don't think that Broxton could have sat in it at that age.
The seat has an opening to place the child (and it has the strap to snap them in) but the opening isn't that large.
I think it would be great when they are smaller, so hopefully we will get use out of it early on!

When do you think that this would be great to use?

How Creative Can You Get? @Creativity4Kids

If your summer could use a bit of excitement in it, make sure to check out Creativity In a Can .  I had never heard of them, but they are pretty nifty if you ask me.  Creativity in a Can is can full of odds and ends arts and crafts supplies.  You can buy the can based on a theme: Art, Motion, Music or others.  Then you let your creativity build whatever your heart desires! There are no instructions and you are free to explore new and creative ways to reach an end goal.   They make smaller cans that are perfect for individual play.  They also have larger cans that hold more craft supplies.  That would be a great one to sit out at a camp (or party) and it would even make a great gift idea for teachers caregivers to have on hand for fun activities!

Here is more information on the Big Creativity Can:
  • Creativity Can
  • Make Anything Possible” A big can filled with colorful craft materials that stimulate kids to use their imaginations to create whatever they like. The materials, though simple and familiar, are thoughtfully selected to inspire maximum creativity. The only instructions are to have fun and be as creative as you can be. There is no right or wrong way to use the materials. We’ve “tested” the can with hundreds of children and they’ve created amazing, fantastic and unique objects and characters, often with imaginative narratives – each one as unique as the individual who created it. Our goal is that millions of kids will enjoy this experience, share their creations with others and demonstrate the tremendous power and joy of creativity.
  • Research shows that creativity is an essential human trait that requires nurturing to allow it to flourish. Studies show that creativity can be learned or encouraged, but sadly, the Torrance Test for Creative Thinking shows it is on the decline in the USA. Creativity is linked with problem solving, innovation, critical thinking, empathy and greater levels of job satisfaction in adults. When surveyed by IBM, 1500 CEOs ranked Creativity as the #1 leadership trait required for future success. The Big Creativity Can is a great tool for encouraging open-ended creative play.
  • The beauty of “The Can” is that you can use it with a group of kids at a party or event or for everyday activities with just your kids. The lack of structure is a welcome change in today’s fast-pace overly-structured environment and kids will love the easy process and inspiring materials. Put away the coloring books and take out “The Can”!

We have a couple different ones.  They are great to take on vacation (rainy day activity if you are stuck in the hotel.)  Also, I think I might throw one in the "Big Brother Bag" I plan on packing with activities for Broxton to have on hand at the hospital while he waits on his little sister to get here!  Do you have a box or bag of creative ideas for free play with your children?

Playful Pigs and Knight Swallowing Dragons? Busy Summer!!! #SummerReading

In keeping with our SUMMER READING, I have a few new books to share with you today!
I have to admit that I love the books that are silly, so when I saw one was called There Was an Old Dragon Who Swallowed a Knight, I knew I was going to be giggling.   Also, when I saw that one was Playful Pigs from A to Z, I knew it was going to be a great new addition to Savannah's library!

You might have read of the Old Lady swallowing things, but until you read about the Dragon swallowing all of the things after the knight, you have no clue what to expect!  This book was super cute and full of illustrations!   The Dragon decides to swallow the Knight (that's not polite) and then seems to swallow everything he sees.  Broxton and I were both laughing, especially when we saw he was about to go after the castle!  He for sure was leaving NOTHING left in the Kingdom!

We enjoyed the book, but the last illustration left Broxton questioning why.
(They had a skeleton head in the Dragon's stomach that wasn't there throughout the story, so he wanted to know where it came from and why it was not mentioned!)  Cute book and one we will for sure be reading again and again!

This book lets us follow a group of 26 pigs as they leave their pig pen and head out for fun in the field down the lane.  I loved that they had a classic illustration look to them and each pigs name started with the letter discussed on the page.  I was hoping that they would not just paint a letter on the pig and introduce the alphabet that way and they did not disappoint!  I also liked that they had descriptive words that went with the letter as well.  I saw it as a way to add a bit of extra education in for fun!

Examples -
Billy Pig balanced on B.

Ned Pig nibbled an N.

We enjoyed both books and are so glad to be adding them to our library!
What books are you reading this summer?

Take Care Down There with @healthy_hoohoo

No matter your age, we all need to take care down there... Here is a product that is "free of harsh chemicals, fragrances and parabens."  Make sure you check to see what they carry, you can never be too careful.

Conception:  In the fall of 2009, one day during a hectic week, Stacy Lyon was busy helping out a friend track down paraben-free personal care items after her friend’s breast cancer tumor biopsy came back loaded with the harsh preservative.  A few days later, a nurse practitioner in a Seattle OBGYN clinic voiced her concerns with seeing reoccurring vaginal infections in patients visiting her office. Yet another close gal pal confided that she had bouts of “not feeling fresh… down there”.  After an exhaustive search, Stacy experienced a ‘light bulb moment” and sensed a market need for a product line which did not yet exist……..and healthy hoohoo was born!
Learning process: From the beginning, Lyon wanted to create a line of products that were simple, pure and effective.  At first Lyon thought she could create the recipe for her line of holistic products herself, but realized quickly that she lacked the necessary skills; “let’s just say that I didn’t get A’s in college chemistry” she retorts.
Acknowledging her weakness and not afraid to reach out, found a talented and experienced formulation chemist who listened to what she wanted and more importantly, what she didn’t want in her line.  Lyon jokes about falling forward into this new line of work; her background consists of twenty years in the ski industry, not natural products.  “I am a firm believer in rolling up one’s sleeves and just diving in – and learning ‘on the fly” she jokes.  Armed with this outlook, she devoured any information she could find on the feminine care industry and turned to her gynecologist for knowledge she needed to make formulation decisions, ranging from the pH values of a woman’s genital area to the plastics used in cosmetic packaging.
With two years under her belt, Lyon say that response from the marketplace has been extremely supportive.  Whether it ever pens-out as a financially successful endeavor, Lyon feels good about bringing healthy hoohoo products and subsequently the education of vulvovaginal wellness to woman of all ages across the U.S.

This ever-so-mild cleanser is pH balanced to complement your personal ecosystem. And our thoughtful blend of extracts will leave you feeling clean and healthy.
