Teaching Safety - I Can Play It Safe {Review}

I need to start this post by saying a HUGE thank you to Elena over at Free Spirit Publishing.
I love blogging and I love reading other blogs.  I was talking to a friend about "stranger danger" and I thought for sure that I should look to see what Free Spirit had to offer.  To be honest with you, I have no clue how to talk to that about Broxton.
I mean, I want my son to be friendly and sociable... BUT, I DO NOT want anything to happen to him.  That also means I do not want him to be scared of people, but I don't want him to trust too much... Know what I mean?

Having worked with Elena before, I emailed her about the book, I Can Play It Safe by Alison Feigh,  as I was not really sure if it was what I was looking for... but I know that Broxton loves reading and if it would help me at all, I wanted to check it out...

As soon as the book arrived, I smiled so big... Thankful that Elena sent it along for me to review.
I will say, the approach to this subject is a bit different than I expected and in the beginning, I was wondering where we were headed....

"When I am playing and having fun, I sometimes imagine that I am an airplane..."
Okay, I was lost... then I turned the page...
It was a comparison.... the child in the book checks in with the person in charge... the same way a plane would prepare for a trip.  (Loved this, as it was easier to explain to Broxton when it was a plane AND a person being careful!)

One big section I was happy for:   Secrets and Surprises.  I was happy to see this explained and related on a kids level...
This book also discussed private area's and it was very reassuring to read that even the author says "... it isn't my fault... "
Kids always need to know that...  as most kids are always looking for approval.

As with all Free Spirit books, the end of the book includes an adult section.
The very first mentions "stranger danger."  I am guilty of calling it this... and after reading I need to make sure to watch what I say... Not all strangers are bad... Just as not all people we "know" are good...

The world out there today can be a scary place.  Very scary!  If I watch the news long enough, I would be terrified to leave my house... I am thankful that I was able to read this book.. Not only to Broxton to help try and explain things to him... but as a reminder to me in how I need to approach different subjects!

Let me know, have you had the talk about personal safety?
If so, any pointers?  What age did you first start talking about it?

Talking To Kids - I'm Like You, You're Like Me {Review}

Broxton had never really been around other kids, until we found the church we go to... and until he started school.  It was hard... Our friends either did not have kids, or their kids were older... or they lived to far... or...  or... or....
We would go to the local parks and he would be the only kid there that day...
It was hard... but we did see people out and about...
I wanted him to get to be sociable, like me...
That was why I was so happy when we found his school... he loves it, we love it... and he is social :)

That being said, we have never really talked about people being like us, or different from us.
I think with the wide mix of children at his school, it is just something he sees and does not think twice about... but I know the conversation will come up one day...

I was excited when we were given the chance to review the book, I'm Like You, You're Like Me by Cindy Gainer.  In this book, we are introduced to kids of all different backgrounds.
The book starts by pointing out (in text) how we are alike:  "We may be the same age or live on the same street.  We may go to the same school or even have the same name."    But at the same time, it shows us (in illustration) how we are different.  There are 4 kids on the picture with different ethnicity and gender represented.
It also tells us how we may be different and it is fun to notice the difference we all are.
I enjoyed reading this with Broxton and we noticed all sorts of things...
One thing I liked was when it spoke about how our bodies were right to us...   and then drove home the point in the illustration by having kids at the beach...  Some were in their swimsuits and others had on clothing... but all were having fun and enjoying the time spent with friends!!!
As we turned each page, I smiled bigger and bigger at the book, knowing that Broxton was learning an important lesson.  We are all different and that is okay, it is what makes us who we are!
The best part for me?
Where it tells you that it is unkind to make fun of one another, that it hurts people's feelings and that we should be nice instead!

At the end of the book, there is an adult guide section.
It breaks it down on how to talk to children after reading the book.
You can discuss: Comparing, Acceptance, Listening, Understanding Self and Others, Kindness and Cooperation!

I am so glad that we were sent this book.  As much as Broxton enjoys reading, this will help him to see that although we are all different, that is what makes each of us special and what makes us love one another!!!

Sterling Kids - Watch Me Grow Series

We love to read and I love reading with Broxton.  We were recently sent two new books for us to check out, from the Watch Me Grow Series from Sterling Kids.
This was a cute book, as it covered Little Chipmunk getting a loose tooth.  At first, he was embarrassed about it, since he new he brushed and flossed, so he did not want anyone to know about it.  He went to the dentist and the dentist explained that he was at the age where he would be losing his baby teeth for his adult teeth to come in.  Broxton is ready for the tooth fairy to come, so we discussed that he has to keep his teeth clean and his teeth healthy, so that the tooth fairy will come when he gets older and it is his time.  This book was great helping me explain about him losing his baby teeth as he gets older!  I already plan to take this one into his class for them to read one day.  (They had dental hygiene "class" the other day, so this works perfect for them to continue the discussion.)

The other book we were sent was Little Raccoon Learns to Share.
In this book, Little Raccoon has a problem in sharing... She was out picking berries and heard her friends planning an impromptu party...  She did not want to come out of the bushes to see her friends, because she did not want to share..   she wanted to go to their party, but once again... did not want to share...
She soon learns that she can share and still enjoy and have a great time!!!
This was a great book to read with Broxton.  He used to have a really hard time sharing (we are getting much better about it now that he is in school and around other kids.)  We talked about how it was hurtful to friends when you don't share and he was the one talking explaining it to me!
I think both of these books were great and I honestly can not wait to see what other books come from their Watch Me Grow Series!!!!
Besides being great books to explain life lessons to young kids, this is also a great book that would make a great gift... I am thinking EASTER!!!!

Curious George Swings Into Spring

The first day of Spring for 2013 is this Wednesday, March 20th.
To get you kicked off to enjoy the new season, there is a new Curious George movie out:  Swing Into Spring.
Swing into Spring is a "full length feature" coming in at 57 minutes.   I loved that it was that length.. It allowed to be a treat as it was longer than a show, but it was not too long to lose a kids interest..
In Swing into Spring, Curious George has a case of Spring Fever... and The Man in the Yellow Hat takes him out to see how the season is changing....
Of course, no episode of Curious George is complete without the monkey getting into something, so he has a mishap...   That leads Hundley to spend some time with them at their country house!!!  Hundley is a bit down about leaving the city, so George is trying to show him spring and get him excited....
Make sure to watch this to see what all happens next!!!!
