Dog Man - The Movie

One thing is for certain... I love my kids and I am always so proud of them.  One thing that I absolutely LOVE about Savannah is that she picked up my love for reading.  She can pretty much always be caught with at least 2 reading books in her bookbag at all times. I don't really remember when, but she jumped into reading DOG MAN books and I have seen several of them over time.  Not sure how many there are, but she has probably read them!!!
Imagine my surprise when I saw the advertisement for DOG MAN the movie... You can bet that as soon as she saw the trailer, she started in asking when we would get to go see it.

From DreamWorks Animation – creators of How to Train Your Dragon and The Wild Robot – comes the canine crime-fighting film adaptation of Dav Pilkey’s literary phenomenon: DOG MAN.  When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured on the job, a harebrained surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born! As he embraces his new identity and strives to impress his Chief (Lil Rel Howery, Get Out), Dog Man must stop the villainous Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson, “Saturday Night Live”) from cloning himself and creating an evil kitten, doubling his evil abilities. The story takes a turn when the kitten forges an unexpected bond with Dog Man and in the process, they discover the power of family to bring even the most hostile foes together.

DOG MAN is expertly written and directed by Peter Hastings (“The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants,” “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness”). The film also stars Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, Rango), Poppy Liu (“Hacks,” The Afterparty), Stephen Root (“Barry,” “King of the Hill”), Billy Boyd (Lord of the Rings franchise, Seed of Chucky), and Ricky Gervais (“The Office,” “Extras”). The film is produced by Karen Foster.

I know nothing about Dog Man, except that it is a popular book amongst grade school kids.  This is a book that both girls and boys both love.  So, to be honest, I was not yay or nay for the  movie, but I did want to let her have the chance to see it.  I did have to tell her that normally books and movies are different and for her to be prepared it might not be the same...  I was not sure, but wanted her aware.
We planned a movie day with drinks and snacks and she was pretty excited to watch it.  I know these times are going to start fading away, so I told her to snuggle up on the couch with me.  Matt even joined us for the movie and all was well.
Once the movie started, the police man and his dog end up getting injured and are joined together.  Talk about weird - but totally something kids would enjoy. Next thing you know there is this evil cat and the cat is out to get the Dog Man and so on and so forth.  Truthfully, I checked out at this point.  I got sidetracked on Facebook - you know how easily that can happen - and before I knew it, the movie was over.  I was surprised when she said that she was glad that she was able to see it, but that it was totally not like the book.  (Not sure how much is true on that, since I have nothing to compare it to, so I don't know if she was just repeating what I had already said to her, or if she really noticed a difference. )
Either way, I am glad that she got to see it and I hope that by taking a popular kids book and making it into a  movie, more kids will learn of this book and become readers!!!

Have you seen the Dog Man Movie? Thoughts?
This will be available on Blu Ray / DVD April 1st, but you can watch digitally now!!!
